Why a service designer started an animal-welfare company

I'm a non-traditional founder. Nine-plus years as a service designer and UX researcher across CMS, CFPB, Truist, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and other government and non-profit organizations taught me one thing above all: the hardest problems aren't technology problems, they're service problems — the gap between what the evidence says works and what the people doing the work can actually do on a Tuesday afternoon.

Animal shelters live in that gap. Peer-reviewed behavioral science shows that structured socialization dramatically changes adoption outcomes — but most shelters track it on paper, whiteboards, or not at all. So I taught myself to ship: the v1 of ShelterSync is built in Flutter, Node.js, and React, validated with veterinary behaviorists from the ACVB and AVSAB, and designed around the operational reality of nonprofit shelters — volunteers, shift changes, and all.

Every feature exists to maximize positive outcomes for the animals while respecting the constraints of the humans caring for them. That's service design. It's the same work I've always done — the stakes just have fur now.
